Ryan Gregory Phillips

Ryan Gregory Phillips is an award-winning writer, director, and editor whose work blends psychological tension with elevated genre storytelling.
His breakout feature, Shortwave, was acquired by NBC Universal for streaming on Peacock and distributed by Sony Pictures.
The film earned over twenty-three official selections and eighteen awards on the festival circuit, including Best Director, Best Feature, Jury Prize, Best Screenplay, and multiple awards for cinematography and editing.
Shortwave screened at the Sitges Film Festival and Raindance Film Festival, and was named one of the “Top 5 Must-See Films” by LA Weekly at its premiere at the Dances With Films Festival.
Phillips was also a Top 10 finalist in the Beverly Hills Screenplay Competition and holds a degree in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina, with additional studies in directing at Long Island University.
Beyond narrative filmmaking, he has directed hundreds of music videos, commercials, and branded content, collaborating with artists such as Neon Hitch and creating work featured on VEVO, MTV, and REVOLT TV. His commercial work includes directing a campaign for Kahlúa featuring Jeff Bridges, as well as documentary work for VICE Sports.

Director Statement

There’s a quiet terror in the idea that evil doesn’t need to break in… you can place yourself in front of it. Walk right into it… face to face… on a sunny day… no rhyme or reason. Just because.
The Host was born from that fear. Not of monsters, but of access. Of how easily we open our doors… our homes… our lives… to strangers wearing the right smile. A rental. A guest. A harmless transaction. Until it isn’t.
I wanted to explore violence not as chaos, but as something patient. Observant. Intimate. The kind that learns you before it destroys you.
This film begins with control. Composed frames. Stillness. Beauty. The illusion of safety. But as that illusion fractures, so does the filmmaking itself. The camera becomes unstable. Voyeuristic. Complicit. By the end, you’re no longer watching the horror… you’re inside it.
Because the scariest part isn’t that someone is watching.
It’s that they were always allowed to be there.
