Julian Lippke

Julian Lippke (b. 1999) studied Media Art & Design at HBKsaar under Prof. Sung-Hyung Cho, then continued with a focus on directing at the University of Applied Sciences Dortmund in 2022. He works with the production company Blickfänger GbR. His horror shorts WERTLOS (2018) and I WANT TO PLAY (2020) won the Bürgermedienpreis Rheinland-Pfalz and were screened at several festivals. Together, they have reached over 20,000 views on YouTube. ROTES WASSER is his latest genre project, developed as part of his current studies.

Director Statement

Ein Badezimmer ohne Fenster, ohne funktionierendes Licht – nur ein flackernder Disco-Duschkopf: So sah meine erste Wohnung in Dortmund aus. Die Leuchtstoffröhre wurde bald ersetzt. Das beklemmende Gefühl blieb. Rotes Wasser entspringt dieser Erinnerung. Der Film erzählt von der Wohnrealität vieler Studierender – kafkaesk, überzeichnet, aber mit wahrem Kern. Die Wohnung im Film ist nicht realistisch; sie ist ein psychischer Raum, Ausdruck von Isolation, Abhängigkeit, Angst.
Gedreht wurde im Studio der Fachhochschule Dortmund, unterstützt vom Mieterverein Dortmund e.?V. Das Set entstand gemeinsam mit Studierenden der Fachrichtung Objekt- und Raumdesign – eine Kulisse zwischen Albtraum und Architekturmodell, irgendwo zwischen Saw (2004) und Parasite (2019). Was atmosphärisch beginnt, kippt zuletzt in rohe, körperliche Gewalt – inspiriert von koreanischen Filmen wie I Saw the Devil (2010). Rotes Wasser ist eine Hommage an diese Genre-Klassiker – und mein Versuch, das Horror-Kino dorthin zu bringen, wo es sonst kaum stattfindet: an meine Hochschule.
When I first moved to Dortmund for university, my new bathroom had no working light, no window – only a dim, color-shifting disco shower head. After a strange first shower, the fluorescent tube was replaced, but the uneasy feeling lingered. What if such a place became the setting for a horror film?
ROTES WASSER is a student project at the University of Applied Sciences Dortmund, supported by Prof. Sandra Hacker and the local tenants‘ association. Horror stories about student housing are sadly widespread – our film tackles this reality in a surreal, nightmarish way.
We shot in the university’s film studio, which gave us full creative freedom. Design students transformed it into a Kafkaesque horror bathroom, inspired by SAW (2004). The film moves from quiet, atmospheric horror to a final act of brutal, physical realism – drawing inspiration from Korean cinema like I Saw the Devil and the claustrophobic interiors of Parasite.
